Gators and “Terrific Tim” chomp Sooners for title
The Florida Gators defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 24-14 last night, to capture its second national title in three years at the BCS FedEx Bowl game. The Gators were led by, who other than Tim Tebow, despite two uncharacteristic interceptions in the first half by their field general. He came in the Championship game with just 2 picks all year long. This was a good game and not your typical title game blow out like we`ve seen in recent years.
Despite both schools averaging over 40 points a game, the two teams were dominated early and late by their respective defenses. After a scoreless first quarter, Tebow drove Florida down field and hooked up with Louis Murphy on a 20-yard touchdown pass, to make it 7-0 Gators with 14:02 left in the 2nd quarter. The Sooners and Sam Bradford would answer back. With 11:49 to go before halftime, Bradford would hookup with Jermaine Gresham on a 6-yard touchdown pass to tie it at 7-7, which would be the score at the half.
The only scoring in the third quarter would be a Percy Harvin 2-yard touchdown run, making the score 14-7 Gators heading into the last quarter of play. Harvin had a magnificent game finishing with 9 carries for 122 yards and 1 touchdown. If not for Tebow, he would have been player of the game no doubt. Remember, he was playing with a hurt ankle and was listed as a game-time decision. His 52-yard break away run set up Jonathan Phillips' 27-yard field goal early in the last quarter for a 17-14 lead. The Gators would finish off the Sooners when Tebow hit David Nelson with a 4-yard touchdown pass, which made it 24-14 with 3:07 left.
Tebow carried the ball on Florida`s final six plays, pounding into the line countless times. It was his pure desire to win that put the Gators on track to become only the second team to win at least 2 Championship Titles in the BCS`s 11-year history. Tebow finished the game with 22 carries for 109 yards and 18-30 passing, with 231 yards and 2 touchdowns. His counterpart Bradford was 26-41 for 256 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 picks. Both Tebow and Bradford are both contemplating the jump from college to the NFL.
