Drew Brees wins A.P. offensive player of the year
The New Orleans Saints field general Drew Brees won the associated press award for offensive player of the year today. He earned 22 of a possible 50 votes to win the award. The Colts Peyton Manning and the Minnesota Vikings Adrian Peterson received 9 votes a piece, to tie for second place in the balloting. The San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers snagged 6 votes, along with Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams-2; Atlanta Falcons star running back Michael Turner- 1; and finally the Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith received one vote.
Brees came up just 15 yards short of breaking legend Dan Marino`s record for passing yards in a single season. Still, even with key receivers injured all year long Brees refused to throw in the towel, as the Saints finished a respectable 8-8. He finished with 5,069 yards, while becoming only the second player in NFL history to accomplish the feat of throwing for 5,000 yards in one season.
Brees tied with Rivers, his former teammate out in San Diego, with a NFL leading 34 touchdown tosses. Brees was 4th in passer rating with a 96.2 mark and led the league in pass attempts at 635. He also led in pass completions with 413. Sometimes, I can`t believe that the Chargers let him go via free agency. I know there were concerns about his injured shoulder, but Brees is a winner. He is finally getting his due with this award.
