Top 5 running backs of 2008 NFL Season
As we approach the end of the NFL regular season, let`s take a look at this years Top 5 running backs. Keep in mind that there are still 3 games left to be played before we hit the postseason!
1) Adrian Peterson-Minnesota Vikings. He has 293 carries for 1,413 yards with 9 touchdowns. His best game was a week 10 game against Green Bay. That week he rushed for 192 yards on 30 carries. Peterson is the next closest back to be mentioned with the great Walter Payton. His open field speed mixed in with his tough ability to be brought down make him the most elusive back the NFL has seen in years! He has 2 plays against Chicago alone this year of 50 or more yards! By the way, his 8-100 yard rushing games this year is tops of these 5!
2) Michael Turner-Atlanta Falcons. Turner the Burner as he is now known in Atlanta, is simply having an unbelievable year! He signed a high-dollar contract in the off-season, and has been worth every penny so far. His stats are 300 carries for 1,269 yards with 14 touchdowns. His best game was the season opener for the Falcons. In that game he rushed for 220 yards on 22 attempts with 2 touchdowns. Also in that game, he had a season-long run from scrimmage of 66 yards for a touchdown. He is perhaps the most rugged back to bring down in the NFL!
3) Clinton Portis-Washington Redskins. Portis is having a great year for the Redskins. He has 266 carries for 1,269 yards on the season with 7 touchdowns. All this while playing hurt half of the season and not letting his teammates down! He has 6-100 yard rushing games this year, including 5 in a row of at least 120 yards in a row. He and O.J. Simpson are the only 2 backs in NFL history to accomplish that feat!
4) Thomas Jones-New York Jets. Jones is a rough and tough back who will run you over if you get in his way! With Brett Favre as his quarterback, Jones is having a career year for the Jets. His season stats are 243 rushes for 1,144 yards with 12 touchdowns. He has 4-100 yard games this year and is one of the main reasons Jets fans are looking at a playoff berth. His best game this year came against the St. Louis Rams. In that game he rushed for 149 yards on 26 carries with 3 touchdowns. Jones is becoming a well known back, for those who didn`t already kn ow!
5) DeAngelo Williams-Carolina Panthers. Williams is having his coming out party at the expense of other NFL teams defenses. His ability to run over and stiff-arm defenders, is why he is rising in the NFL rushing list in 2008! For the year he has 212 carries good for 1,141 yards with 13 touchdowns. His best game was on a Monday Night when the Panthers played the Buccaneers for first place in the NFC South. That night he rushed for 186 yards on 19 carries and had 2 touchdowns. He now has 5 100 yard rushing games this year! Williams is built for the long-haul, and the Panthers better take care of him!
