Joe Namath revisited….
In a world of some of the most colorful quarterbacks, Joe Namath was perhaps one of the greatest. He had a great NFL Football career and some forget that he started his career in the AFL. Of course the AFL would merge to its rival, the NFL in 1970. Namath was born May 31, 1943 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. He played his college football at Alabama and would go on to play with the N.Y. Jets and finish his career with the Rams. In his 13 years of pro football, he was the first quarterback to throw for 4000 yards in one season.
However, his most famous prediction came when he guaranteed a victory over the Baltimore Colts. This Colts team was considered one of the best of all-time. Besides, they finished that year 13-1. After Namath stated "The Jets will win on Sunday, I guarantee it", people thought he was crazy! This was after all, a crazy prediction considering that the NFL`S teams had beaten the AFL`S teams by a combined score of 68 to 24 in two prior Bowls. However, Namath would go on to finish the game with 206 yards passing with no picks, en-route to a 16-7 historical upset!
He was nicknamed "Broadway Joe" of course after the street, but also because he enjoyed his New York life and he was just so colorful. After his career ended, he landed roles in acting and even did some of the most craziest commercials. He not only played and won in perhaps the most important game in NFL history, he helped put the NFL on the map!
