Is it time for Washington Redskins to change their name?
Npy asked:
Given that the term "redskin" is considered derogatory by many people, is it time for the Washington Redskins to change their name? If not, then how important is it that some people consider it a racist term and how should their concerns be addressed?

I think most Native Americans would be upset if the name changed. I think they are willing to overlook the derogatory part in exchange for having a sports franchise that represents their heritage.
I really don’t think most Native Americans are offended in any way by the name. It is mostly the negative groups out there that have nothing better to do than find fault with something and bit** about it.
I would be all for a vote by Native Americans to decide whether or not the name should be changed.
But should we change the name of the Dallas Cowboys also…as it represents those that killed the ‘Redskins’.
NO.

No.
Just because you or someone has a chip on their shoulder over something never intended as derogatory doesn’t mean everyone should jump up and cater to them. This is political correctness gone way too far.
ULM changed its name from the Indians to the Warhawks. I guess the Cowboys will be the next one to be forced to change. And what about the workers and vegetarians who think it derogatory to be named after meat packers? Will we see the Green Bay Bluejays? Do little people feel slighted by the San Francisco Giants? Maybe change the Raiders name so the Peace Activists will be content? Do the Hell’s Angels object to New Orleans having the Saints? And maybe we shoud have the Cleveland Neutrals so as to not offend people of color. I’m sure there are many others also.
It’s a slippery slope once started.

NO. Just because the ACLU or some liberals somewhere think it’s offensive, it should NOT be changed. Liberals want you to believe that everything offends somebody somewhere. But where are the actual Native Americans who are so upset and so bothered by this?? Why aren’t THEY complaining?? Every time somebody in this ridiculously over-sensitive era whines that Redskins is offensive, it is always a non-Native American. So please, GET A LIFE. Way before the ACLU’s time, when this team moved to Washington from Boston, the owner named them Redskins IN HONOR of their Native American head coach who was loved by everyone. Taking away the honor of that coach just because some whiny liberals say it’s offensive would be a big mistake.

No, anyone that thinks we should is ignorant and don’t know what a Redskin is. The Redskins are named after a tribe that would paint their skin red when going in to any kind of battle or, I think, hunting. It was dumb enough having to change the Bullets, this would be even dumber.
HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!

The fact of the matter is that the majority of the people that complain about this aren’t american indian and simply have an ongoing initiative to piss and moan about everything. Everyone is out to do something to someone and pitching a fit about it is the answer…….grow up. Another fact….most indians are very proud of their heritage and I would BET MONEY if you asked them who their favorite team is they would say the skins’ or the chiefs…..they are probably happy about it and don’t cry about something that MIGHT be taked as derogatory like other races do in this country. There are many other more important issues to be concerned with, like our failing economy.

I’m American Indian. It doesn’t bother me.

I like the name “Redskins” I don’t believe it is derogatory or demeaning to Indians or anybody else. That name was chosen to honor not to belittle. I think you are the racist. Ignore the bassholes that are offended by the name. Let them get a life.
Do you support changing all mascots named after Indians? If so you must also favor changing the names of states, cities, towns, streets, and all things named to honor the American Indian. You can’t have it both ways unless you are one of the P.C. idiots that have infested our once great country.
